The first series of Eliot lectures, four in all, first delivered at the University of Kent in October 1967. Some of the lectures had been printed, in whole or in part, elsewhere before the publication of this book, but they are gathered together here for the first time. Eliot's wife Valerie is the book's dedicatee.
