[CAJA, Jerome] AVENA, Thomas and KLEIN, Adam

Jerome: After The Pageant

San Francisco: Bastard Books, 1996

4to, pp. 95. Original illustrated boards. No dustwrapper, as issued. A little bump to the head of the spine, otherwise a fine copy.

First edition.
Jerome Caja [1958-1995] was a painter and performance artist, closely associated with the more extreme wing of West Coast gay culture. Firmly of the Revenge-For-A-Catholic-Childhood school, Caja was no bad draughtsman, but his subject matter was predictably, dully outrageous, combining religious and gay iconography to produce work with titles like Sacred Heart Circle Jerk and The Last Hand Job. This volume, a tribute retrospective published the year after his death from AIDS, trades heavily on Caja's scandalous reputation, while cravenly omitting all the images which might have caused its publication legal problems. A useful introduction to his work, though, and in fine condition.
