Towards A Poor Theatre

Holstebro, Denmark: Odin Teatrets Forlag, 1968

8vo, pp. 262. Original printed stiff paper wrappers. Wrappers a little worn and rubbed, with lifting to head of spine, but a well preserved copy.

First edition, SIGNED BY GROTOWSKI ON TITLE PAGE. With a preface by Peter Brook.

Grotowski's Poor Theatre looked to break down as completely as possible the barriers between production and audience. Props, costumes, sometimes even language were eschewed, and audience members often found themselves part of the performance. The aim was to reduce theatre to its bare essentials, and to enable the event to become less of a performance and more of an equally shared experience. This reduction could often be merely reductive, but many of today's leading theatre innovators (notably Roberts Lepage and Wilson) are indebted to Grotowski's dramaturgical iconoclasm.

The first edition of this title is very scarce signed.
