London: Gollancz, 1968
8vo, pp. 288. Original blue boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Illustrated endpapers and dustwrapper. Slightly cocked, corners a little bumped, otherwise a near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with some sunning to spine and top edge of rear panel, and with a little wear to head of spine.
First edition, INSCRIBED BY SHEILA LING, ONE OF THE BOOK'S CONTRIBUTORS: 'To Moray and Pam from Sheila Ward Ling for our memories of Sussex in 1939.'
Johnson's collection of first-hand accounts of wartime evacuation to the country; contributors include Michael Aspel, Ruth Fainlight, Alan Sillitoe and Jonathan Miller -- and Sheilah Ward Ling, who has inscribed this copy on the front free endpaper, and has also corrected by hand the date of birth given in her biographical note on p. 282. Ling was an author of children's books, and the wife of television producer Peter Ling, co-creator of the long-running ITV series Crossroads.
A nice copy, with an association to match.
