Offsetting to endpapers, light bumping to spine ends, contemporary ownership signature and Christopher Caudwell quotation to ffep., a very good copy in a heavily marked dustwrapper, darkened and mottled at spine with slight loss to spine ends, one or two small closed tears, typed Christopher Caudwell quotation added to front flap beneath printed blurb.



First edition. One of 1200 copies. Introduction by co-editor and contributor Stephen Spender.

Contributors include W.H.Auden, C. Day Lewis, Louis MacNeice, Pablo Neruda, George Barker, Herbert Read and Sylvia Townsend Warner.

The typed quotation on the front flap comes from Caudwell's essay T.E. Lawrence: A Study In Heroism, published by Bodley Head the year before this volume in the posthumous collection Studies Of A Dying Culture. (Caudwell was killed in action in the Spanish Civil War in 1937, at the age of twenty-nine).
