Dark brown endpapers. All edges gilt. Tissue guards to illustrations. Boards a little rubbed and discoloured, some light historical damp resulting in bubbling to spine and rear panel.

First edition. 24 chapters, each describing a different site in Palestine, and each accompanied by a photogravure plate from photographs by Cecil Shadbolt. Simultaneously published with an edition of 100 copies bound in vellum.

Henry Harper [1835-1900] was a British painter and member of the Palestine Exploration Fund. Many of his books covered his travels in the region. Cecil Shadbolt [1859-1892] was a pioneer of early aerial photography, and was killed in a ballooning accident at Crystal Palace at the age of thirty-three. The 1894 edition of this book, published two years after his death, includes a portrait and memoir of him.
