[Brassai] MORAND, Paul

Paris De Nuit

Paris: Editions Arts et Metiers Graphiques, N.d. [1933]

Spiral-bound 4to. pp. 62. Original photographic stiff paper wrappers, front wrapper lettered in red. Cobblestone photographic endpapers. Some creasing and edgewear to wrappers, with one (9mm) closed tear to leading edge of front panel.

First edition of Brassai's first photobook.

A PG-rated collection of Brassai's images of the night-time underbelly of Paris -- his portraits of the prostitutes and gangsters who populated the brothels and bars were not thought publishable here -- but '[h]e was, however, breaking ground by wandering around at night, and emphasizing the nocturnal city's otherworldly glamour, even if he could not show its seediness as fully as he might have liked. [...] [O]ne should think of [the book] as amongst the best produced and influential photobooks ever.' (Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History Volume I).

A very good copy of a key photographic text, and a notoriously fragile book.
