First edition of Episode Four of Tony Hancock's Australian TV series, THE EPISODE DURING THE FILMING OF WHICH HANCOCK COMMITTED SUICIDE.
In 1968 Tony Hancock travelled to Australia to make what he hoped would be a career-saving eight-part television series. Hancock had recently been divorced; his career was on the floor; his alcoholism was rampant. All this made success unlikely at best, but what he found in Australia doomed the project to certain failure: pitiful scripts, a poor supporting cast, and the absence of a studio audience left the show's star horribly exposed, clearly reading off cue cards, all but begging for laughs. With only three episodes completed, Hancock committed suicide with an overdose of barbiturates. His two farewell notes were written on the versos of the last two pages of his own copy of this episode.
Extremely scarce. We can find no record of another copy of this script ever having been offered for public sale.
