Reprinted memorial edition, LENGTHILY AND AFFECTIONATELY INSCRIBED BY EDWARD HERRMANN TO LEO McKERN.

In 1992 Edward Herrmann and Leo McKern co-starred in A Foreign Field, part of the BBC's Screen One series. Directed by Charles Sturridge, the story of D-Day veterans revisiting their past also starred Alec Guinness, Lauren Bacall and Jeanne Moreau.

This book of verse was given to McKern by Herrmann as a wrap present, and is fondly inscribed:

'26.X.92. Dearest Leo, Many, many thanks for your wonderful good humor, your deep well of bawdy limericks, and your fresh common sense. You got me through -- got us all through -- a most wicked shoot. And you act rather well, may I say. I'm very happy to know you. With love, Ed H.
P.S. See footnotes to "If" -- the complete version will be sent! E.'.

This last refers to a referenced parody of Kipling's poem which begins: 'If you can keep your girl, when all around you, / Are losing theirs and blaming it on you...'. In the film Hermann and McKern's characters discover that they have been in love with the same woman all their lives.
