The Little Horse Bus

London: Max Parrish, 1952

Small 4to, pp. 35. Original red boards, lettered in gilt to spine, and gilt device to front panel. Spine ends a little bumped, but a near fine copy in a dustwrapper which is complete but which has a number of large, closed tears, previously repaired with tape to the reverse (now removed).

First edition.

Greene and his lover Dorothy Glover (who illustrated this volume under a pseudonym) made up children's stories together as a way of passing the time during the blackouts of the Second World War. Four of these stories eventually found their way into print. The original plan was for them to appear under Dorothy's name (real or assumed), but the publishers quickly realised that Greene's name on their covers was likely to shift more copies. Which is how one of the twentieth century's most revered literary figures came to win the Boys' Clubs of America Junior Book Award for 1955.
