AUDEN, W.H.

The Gobble Poem

London: Fuck Books Unlimited, 1967

Small 4to, pp. 6. Lilac stapled stiff paper wrappers. A little bumping to corners and light wear to leading edge of (outsize) wrappers, otherwise a near fine copy.

Stated 'First English Printing', but actually the second UK edition, first issue, preceded by the US Fuck You Press edition, and a UK edition of 1966 published 'in London, in the Charing Cross Road'. Auden's bibliographers estimate this edition to have run between 250 and 400 copies. Early copies (like this one) had lilac wrappers; when stock ran out, green card covers were used for the rest.

Thought to have been written in 1948, Auden's famous versified blowjob remained unpublished until Ed Sanders of New York's Fuck You Press got his hands on a copy of the poem in 1965. Auden both acknowledged and denied authorship of the poem over many years. It's his work: it's too brilliant to be anyone else's, and in any case he admitted as much to a wide circle of friends and, in later life, a journalist or two.
