The Collected Poetry Of W.H. Auden

New York: Random House, 1945

8vo, pp. 466. Original green boards, brown spine label lettered in gilt. Top edge green. Some light mottling to boards, offsetting to endpapers, a very good copy in a very good dustrapper, two small chips to top edge at flap folds, another to leading edge of rear flap, light edgewear to spine ends.

First edition.

Random House took some persuading by Auden to publish this 'definitive collection of all I wish to preserve'. It proved a sound decision: the book was reprinted three times in its year of publication, and many times subsequently. Dedicated to Christopher Isherwood and Chester Kalman, the error in the epigraph ('the neural' for 'their neural') was corrected in subsequent printings.
