Offsetting to endpapers, small old damp stain to lower edge of text block, top edge dusty, a very good copy in a worn and darkened dust jacket, faded at spine, and a closed tear to front spine fold.

First edition, INSCRIBED BY BRITTAIN: 'For Find Graucob with kindest remembrances from Vera Brittain January 1st, 1940'.

Winifred Holtby died in 1935 at the age of thirty-seven: her best-known novel, South Riding, was published posthumously. She met Vera Brittain in 1919 when they were fellow undergraduates at Oxford, and the two became lifelong friends.
