First Love, Last Rites

London: Cape, 1975

8vo, pp. 165. Original black boards, lettered in gilt to spine. Age-toning to edges of text block, spotting to top edge, but a very good copy in a near fine dustwrapper, one small scuff to top edge, and with the lightest of edgewear to spine ends.

First edition of the author's first book, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR AT THE TIME OF PUBLICATION.

McEwan's signature appears in the top corner of the front free endpaper. McEwan has said that in the mid-1970s, still unused to the rituals of the successful author, when he was asked to sign his first book he would sign it not on the title page, but where he would sign his name if the book belonged to him. The positioning here attests that the signature is an early one, contemporaneous with the publication of the book.
