DONALDSON, William

Both The Ladies And The Gentlemen

London: Talmy Franklin, 1975

Large 8vo., pp. 199. Original black boards, lettered in gilt on spine. Fine in a near fine dustwrapper, with just a little edgewear.

First edition.
Donaldson is best known as the man behind The Henry Root Letters, but managed to pack a lot more than that into a thoroughly dissolute life. Three times married, he had innumerable affairs, and when in his late fifties sex started to pall he developed a crack cocaine habit. This, his only novel, is drawn from his time living in a brothel run by an ex-girlfriend in the 1970s.
