First English-language edition, first published in French in 1964 under the title La Guerre: 1914-1918: Tragédie Bouffe.
'René Arnaud was just twenty-one when he was called up in September 1914. Three months later he was a 2nd Lieutenant in an infantry regiment in the front line. He fought on the Somme, went through the Champagne offensive, twice suffered the agony of Verdun, and was eventually 'saved' by being attached to the newly arrived American forces as liaison officer.'
