[Olympia Press] Bretonne, Restif De La

Pleasures And Follies Of A Good-Natured Libertine

Paris: Olympia Press, 1956

Small 8vo, pp. 260. Original brown stiff paper wrappers, printed in black. Some wear to spine ends, a little edgeworn, small (?printed) ownership signature to endpaper at rear. A very good copy.

Second Olympia edition.

First published in 1798, and of quite outstanding filthiness, Restif de la Bretonne's novel was first published by Olympia in February 1955 -- the first unexpurgated English-language edition. This edition, issued in December of the following year, corrects an error in the Table of Contents [pp. 263-5] and carries the new publication date, but is otherwise entirely un-reset.

Translated by Austryn Wainhouse, here using the pseudonym 'Pieralessandro Casavini'. Wainhouse translated many books for Olympia, and later became editor of Merlin, the influential Left-bank literary magazine.

A very good copy.
