[Profumo Scandal] DENNING, Lord

Lord Denning's Report

London: HMSO, 1963

8vo, pp. 114. Original pale blue paper wrappers, lettered in black to front and rear panels.

First edition.

'The Circumstances Leading To The Resignation Of The Former Secretary Of State For War, Mr. J.D. Profumo.' These circumstances, as the most cursory reference to the vast amount of literature the scandal generated will tell you, included topless models, a well-connected osteopath, a Russian naval attaché, lies to Parliament, cottages on country estates, nude bathing, and the Minister of State for War.

Probably the main cause of the Conservative Party's defeat at the 1964 general election, the Profumo affair is here the subject of a government inquiry by Lord Denning, with chapter headings every bit as salacious as those you would expect to find in the pulpiest of pulp novels: The Slashing And Shooting, Christine Tells Her Story, "He's A Liar". One of the most enthralling reads ever published by a government.

CROWLEY, Mart

The Boys In The Band

London: Secker & Warburg, 1969

8vo, pp. 182. Original green boards, lettered in silver on spine.

First UK edition.

Mart Crowley's off-Broadway sensation, filmed in 1970 with the same principal cast by William Friedkin. Overly waspish and limp-wristed for today's tastes, the play nonetheless was a key catalyst for change going in to the 1970s. A key text in the history of both Gay Lit. and Gay Rights.

[Gay Activism]

20 Questions About Homosexuality

New York: Gay Activists Alliance, 1973

8vo, pp. 24. Original olive green stiff paper wrappers.

First edition.

The New York-based Gay Activists Alliance was founded in 1969, six months after the Stonewall riots. Single-issue, politically non-aligned, the GAA quickly established itself as one of the most effective and well-organised gay pressure groups in the early years of the Gay Liberation movement.

This pamphlet, answering questions about homosexuality and the gay lifestyle not just for wider society but for those looking to acclimatise to their sexuality in the face of a hostile world, is a wonderful, touching survivor from the Gay Rights movement of the early 1970s. A fine copy, too.
